We meet again this week!
I hope you all enjoyed your break from school and scouts, it is now time to get back to working on rank badges. If you have not paid for rechartering, you need to do so this Tuesday to not be dropped from our pack. If you are having financial issues, please let us know Tuesday night and we can work something out so your scout can continue with the program. If you are a leader, please make sure you have taken all training needed for your position. If you are unsure of your training, check with Travis Crabtree. We really need all parents to take the Youth Protection training. We are hoping to set up a speaker to come give this training in the month of January to all pack parents, but you can also take this training online.
Our next parent meeting will be this coming Tuesday at the church at 6PM, click here to see topics that will be covered.
I hope over break that you were collecting canned food for SAFE, the scout that turns in the most by January 13, 2015 will earn a BSA sleeping bag valued at $50.
Remember to check out the website. We post new pictures and documents almost weekly. Speaking of pictures, if you have pictures from any of our past events we would like to get a digital copy of those. We would like to have pictures scrolling during our Blue and Gold banquet for scouts, parents, grandparents, and friends to see. If you have them, either email me or post them on our Facebook page.
Bowling Belt Loop
At the roller skating event, we polled parents to see if people would be interested in doing an event on Martin Luther King weekend and what type of event. Bowling was what most of the people were interested in. We are going to offer bowling at County Club Lanes in Burlington on Sunday January 18, 2015. The location prices are $3.25 for shoes and $1.75 per game that you bowl. If you bowl 2 games cost is $6.75 per person and if you bowl 4 games the cost is $10.25 we will start bowling at 2PM on that Sunday. Click here if you want to go bowling with us!
We had a great turnout for Roller skating with over 17 scouts attending this event! Our scouts learned that putting on something with wheels is not always easy to steer and stay up. Scouts worked on earning the roller skating belt loop and just having fun with their friends.
On January 1, 2015 two families and three Tiger Cub scouts met in Winston Salem to hike historic Bethabara. We hiked 2.3 miles of somewhat wet trails but learned about the first Moravian settlement in North Carolina. This location was settled before Old Salem it is a wonderful place to go learn about history. The scouts worked on the Hiking and Map and Compass belt loops.
Skiing Options
Every year the BSA offers Scouts on Skis days at Winterplace WV. This is offered council wide to all cub scout and boy scouts. Our family has participated in the past and it is a very nice ski slope. The dates for this year's opportunities are January 25, February 8, and March 1. These are all Sundays and the cost is $55 per person. Click here to get additional information if you are interested. Also, if you are interested please sign up on the sign up sheet so we can see who is interested and which time you want to go.
The second option is the Crabtree family is going to go to Sugar Mountain in Boone, NC for the weekend of January 23-25, 2015. We could setup a group skiing option on January 24 for a half-day of skiing from 12:30-4:30. The cost would be $42 for the scouts and $61 for the adults, that includes the rental and lift tickets, helmets would be extra. To get that price, we would need 15 people to sign up and pay in advance to ski. If you are interested please sign up here.
Pinewood Derby will happen in March,.As we get closer to the date, we will send out the rules about this event. Some people were asking if they can purchase kits. We will have them at the upcoming meetings and they are $4 per kit. Also, Lowe's Home Improvement offers Derby Days where they will show you tools you can use on the kits to help you. The scouts can get a patch for attending the training session: the dates offered are January 17, January 31, February 7, and February 21 from 11AM-1PM. At our leaders meeting we will discuss hosting a workshop day for people who need help cutting out their car.
Finally BSA (Boy Scouts of America) reevaluated the Cub Scout Program that we are currently using and have decided to change the program to be more in-line with the Boy Scout program. This program will go into effect on June 1, 2015. I have searched online for information on the new program and found a few files that you may be interested in reading. On the pack website under the documents section you will see the heading Cub Scout 2015 Program changes, here is link to that page on the website, this section is at the bottom of the page.
