** I hope everyone enjoyed the winter weather and got to spend some family time together. Now it is time to get back to scouting!

Blue and Gold
------------------------------------------------------------
Our annual Blue and Gold will be this Saturday at 6PM at the Shriners Club in Burlington. This is our big event where we celebrate scouting and honor the scouts who have earned rank. We invite family and friends to attend. You will need to sign up  and make a meat choice selection and pay before the event before or on Saturday.. Also if you plan to participate in the cake bake, please make sure to note that on the sign up sheet. We will have certificates for scouts who signed up for this event. If you are going to participate in the cake bake, plan to arrive no later than 5:45 to get your cake turned in for judging. The cakes have to be homemade, not store bought. The cakes will serve as the dessert for this event.

We need everyone to arrive by 5:45 so that we can start by 6PM. We have a lot going on this night and our goal is to finish by 8PM, but we will need to start on time!

Parents/Leaders the deadline for entering the awards will be Wednesday at 5PM, we will run reports that evening and make a list of what needs to be order that night for ordering on Thursday, so it can be picked up by Friday. Parents please turn in your scout books to your leaders on Tuesday night so they can record anything your scout as earned.

Our Hike on Saturday was changed due to road conditions and weather, so instead our scouts met at the Swepsonville Park and walked the mile long trail. We had 9 scouts and their families hike in the snow/ice which I think was a first for our pack. Thanks to all the scouts and their families for braving the elements!

If you still have food from scouting for food to turn in, you can do that Tuesday night. Give it to Travis.

March 2 our Webelos II will bridge to Troop 65, this is a very special event and all pack families are invited to attend. This will be at the Boy Scout cabin which is located just off Sweps-Sax Rd, it is the dirt road in the hard curve, named Jordan Drive. It is limited parking so carpooling is highly encouraged. They are asking families to bring snacks after the event. I would like to encourage the Webelos I families to attend to start the process of bonding with the troop.

Important Dates to Remember
* BALOO Training April 18 at Camp Woodfield
* Mom & Me camping at Camp Woodfield May 2-3

Beaver Day is the official work day at each camp facility. To obtain the Honor Pack Award at summer camp (Webelos Camp), each pack is required to have sent personnel to help get the camp ready for hundreds of scouts across the weeks of camp. This year, Camp Woodfields' Beaver Day is May 30th. It usually runs from about 0830 hours to about 1400 hours and lunch is provided at no cost to you. However, we need a head count of who is going so the proper amount of food can be provided. Chores include painting, power washing, limb and debris removal, trail clearing, etc...  Please let Travis know if you plan to attend and what you can offer to help with.

Camp Cherokee Beaver Day is May 2 for the bridging Webelos Parents, similar format as listed above.

Lisa

** Scouting for Food
------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks to all the families that participated in the Scouting for Food. We had 19 scouts participate and we collected over eleven hundred pounds of food for SAFE.

We need everyone to pay for Blue and Gold and to sign up if you plan to attend. We only have 2 more meeting nights before the big event. You can use scout bucks to pay for this event, if you want to do that either let me or Spencer know. The venue will need a headcount for seating and food, so make sure to sign up. Click here to get included in the headcount! )

With the weather being a concern this coming week, I wanted to remind parents our general rule is if school does not meet then we do not have scouts. So if school is cancelled on Tuesday we will not meet that night.

We have a hike this coming weekend. We will hike a trail close to Lake Brandt in Greensboro, should be fun, remember to wear good foot wear and you may want to bring a small backpack for water and snacks.

Directions to the hike - The Nat Greene Trail is accessible at the Lake Brandt Marina. Trail parking is available at the marina next to the large trailhead sign. The marina is closed on Tuesdays, but parking is available on the right side of the gate with the trail access on the left. Parking is also available in the small gravel lot at the trailhead, east of Horse Pen Creek on Old Battleground Road. Access to the trail is also available at the intersection with the Lake Brandt Greenway, just south of the H. Michael Weaver Bridge.

Some parents have inquired about BALOO training. BALOO stands for Basic Adult Leadership Outdoor Orientation. When the pack offers camping trips to our group, we must have two leaders who hold this certification. There is no test, just a day long training course. It is really good training for any parent. It is all about camping, generally you cook your lunch during this program. It is going to be offered at Camp Woodfield April 18, 2015, which is a weekend we are looking as a pack of maybe camping at Camp Woodfield. I took the class with 4 other members of the pack back a couple of years ago and we enjoyed the training. Click here for topics cover. If you are interested in helping with the Pinewood Derby event this year, there will be a planning meeting this Tuesday at 6PM. The goal of this meeting is to find a weekend in April that best fits everyone's schedule for our event. Once we have selected that date, then we can set the practice event and also the workshop. This meeting will take place regardless of the weather unless the Pinewood Derby committee decides to cancel it.

Lastly, remember that the Troop will be hosting their Spaghetti Dinner February 21, 2015 from 5:30-8PM at the Eli Whitney Community Building. Cost is $7 per adult and $4 for children, all proceeds will go towards summer camp cost. Please share this with friends and families to spread the word in hopes of a great turnout for the Troop.

Lisa

Congrats to Colton Belcher for turning in the most canned goods and earning the BSA sleeping bag!

Next Tuesday we will have our parents/leaders meeting. We will be making final decisions on Blue and Gold, Scouting for Food and Scout Sunday. We will start making plans for our Pinewood Derby event that will take place in March. We invite all parents to join us in helping make these plans.

This coming Saturday is Scouting for Food and we would like for all scouts to participate in collecting food. Remember the food we collect will be given to SAFE. Scouts that participate in collecting food can come to the Pinewood Derby practice to watch their car run down the track. Please let me know the area you plan to canvass so we don't have duplication of effort.

Yours in Scouting,
Lisa

Remember the district Banquet is a time to come enjoy and celebrate the accomplishments of your fellow Volunteers and Scouts! Thursday January 29th, 2015 at 6:00pm at Shiloh Presbyterian Church, address 2638 Grand Oaks Boulevard, Burlington, NC 27215.  Cost $10 per plate. All are invited. The purpose of the banquet is to thank the adult leaders of the Alamance District. We will also be honoring our 2014 Eagle Scouts as well as our 2014 Fish Club. ($750 popcorn prize club.) Youth being honored will not be charged. However, we ask that their parents pay their registration. You have to sign up to attend this eventclick here to sign up

We have some really important events coming up in the next couple of months. We will start with scouting for food. This is the biggest community service event that is put on by BSA. The good thing is that BSA will allow the food that we collect to be turned into SAFE, so everything that we collect will help our local community. For the past couple of years, we have tied participating in Scouting for Food to our Pinewood Derby event. At the last parents meeting, it was decided that we would continue this tradition. Scouts who turn in bags of food will be allowed to bring their built car to our Pinewood Derby practice, which will be March 14, location and time TBD. Scouts will be allowed to put their car on our track and run it a couple of times to see how well it runs compared to others.

Scout Sunday is February 8, 2015, this is a time when our scouts with the Troop Scouts come together with the congregation of Saxapahaw United Methodist Church to celebrate all the accomplishments that have happened because of the church's support. We are planning on providing them some pictures from this past year and they would like scouts to help with the service. If your scout would like to help with being an usher, greeting people, reading scripture, or talking about something they have learned or fun things they have done while being in scouts, then let me know. After the service, the scouts are going to host a pot luck lunch. We would like to ask each family bring an item to feed their family plus one. This should be a rewarding time for both the scouts and the congregation.

Our next event big event is our Blue and Gold event will be February 28, 2015 at 6PM at the Shriners Club. We welcome you to invite all family members to attend this event. We are working on the cost. The pack will cover the cost of the scouts and our leaders. Our tradition is we do a scout and adult partner cake bake contest for the desserts. The scouts really enjoy picking a cake idea and help bring it to shape.  The cake can be scout related or it can just be something that they are interested in. Please start signing up so we can work on getting a headcount!

We have another hike planned on February 21, 2015 at 1PM on the Palmetto to Nat Green Trail, the trail will have us circle Lake Brandt which is located in Greensboro near the Historic Guilford Courthouse Military Park. Should be a great view for the whole hike. Click here to sign up!

The last big event that we have coming soon is the Pinewood Derby. We are working on creating a committee that will help with the planning of this event. What I can tell you is that we will have a workshop for families that need help cutting out their cars. We will have a practice day for scouts that help with scouting for food that will be March 14 and our Pinewood Derby event will be March 21. We will have car kits that can be purchased at the meetings, they are $4 per kit. Not only do the scouts run and decide a winner, but we also run an Outlaw Division that parents and/or siblings can build a car and race. There are rules for both groups on weight of the car and other items, that I will include in next week's email and also post on the website.

Save the Date, Troop 65 is planning a Spaghetti dinner on February 21, 2015 from 5:30-8PM at the Eli Whitney Community Building to raise money for the Boy Scouts to go to summer camp. Cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children. Click here to download the flyer and pass them around work and friends!

Yours in Scouting,

Lisa
