No Cub Scout Meeting this week! The God & Me program will meet at 5:45PM at the church!

Today we had 21 scouts plus their families bowling at Buffalo Lane. It was great fun for all those who turned out to bowl! Pack 65 had over 50 people bowling and we took up over half of the bowling lanes! Thanks to Kelly Belcher for setting all this up and reviewing the rules with our scouts! Remember if you have pictures from any of the events, please share on our Facebook page. I have uploaded pictures from today's event to the pack website www.pack65nc.com

The scouts who sold over $750 worth of popcorn can attend the district banquet dinner January 29, 2015  at Shiloh Presbyterian Church on Grand Oaks Blvd for free and you will receive your award. The district banquet is held once a year to honor scouts and leaders in our district and the accomplishments that they have made to the scouting community. The also honor this year's Eagle Scouts. If you would like to attend, there is a cost for the parents to attend just the scouts who sold the $750 get in free, if you opt not to attend we will pick up your awards for you. To sign up and pay to attend click here.

For families interested in skiing, Jennifer Freeland passed along a site that gives great discounts to Beach Mountain, just 3 hours away and it is the best price I have seen.  Here is the link if you are interested. http://www.liftopia.com/ski-resort-info/resort/704010/NC/Beech-Mtn.htm

Canned Food Collection Deadline is This Tuesday! Collect cans and earn a great BSA sleeping bag, the scout with the most wins! Right now Colton Belcher leads with 179!

We had a great parent leaders meeting this week.  Thanks to all those parents and leaders that attended. If you were unable to attend you can click here to get the notes from the meeting.

From our parent/leaders meeting, we selected a location for our Blue and Gold and we will meet again this week at the Crabtree's house to discuss additional plans for this event. If you want to attend, plan to be at the Crabtree's at 6:30PM on Thursday, January 15, 2015. It was suggested that we make it a pot luck, you don't have to bring anything to attend but you can if you want. Crabtree's address is 1700 Old Carriage Court, Haw River, NC  27258.

Click here for our winter newsletter which has great information about current and upcoming events.

Scout Sunday is February 8, 2015.  This is the time when scouts from both the Troop and Pack come together to help with the service. We will be asking scouts who want to participate to volunteer. We will need scouts to serve as ushers, scripture reading, and Pastor Sue would like a select few of the boys to get up and talk about either something they have learned or what they most enjoy about scouting to the congregation. During the service the scouts who have earned the God & Me and God & Family awards will be presented their religious knots. It should be a very special time for those scouts. After the service the Pack and Troop plan to host a pot luck for the congregation. The scout families are asked to bring food to feed their family plus one. The church will provide drinks and paper products.

Yours in Scouting,
Lisa

We meet again this week!

I hope you all enjoyed your break from school and scouts, it is now time to get back to working on rank badges.
If you have not paid for rechartering, you need to do so this Tuesday to not be dropped from our pack. If you are having financial issues, please let us know Tuesday night and we can work something out so your scout can continue with the program. If you are a leader, please make sure you have taken all training needed for your position. If you are unsure of your training, check with Travis Crabtree. We really need all parents to take the Youth Protection training.  We are hoping to set up a speaker to come give this training in the month of January to all pack parents, but you can also take this training online.

Our next parent meeting will be this coming Tuesday at the church at 6PM, click here to see topics that will be covered.

I hope over break that you were collecting canned food for SAFE, the scout that turns in the most by January 13, 2015 will earn a BSA sleeping bag valued at $50.

Remember to check out the website. We post new pictures and documents almost weekly. Speaking of pictures, if you have pictures from any of our past events we would like to get a digital copy of those. We would like to have pictures scrolling during our Blue and Gold banquet for scouts, parents, grandparents, and friends to see. If you have them, either email me or post them on our Facebook page.

Bowling Belt Loop

At the roller skating event, we polled parents to see if people would be interested in doing an event on Martin Luther King weekend and what type of event. Bowling was what most of the people were interested in. We are going to offer bowling at County Club Lanes in Burlington on Sunday January 18, 2015. The location prices are $3.25 for shoes and $1.75 per game that you bowl. If you bowl 2 games cost is $6.75 per person and if you bowl 4 games the cost is $10.25 we will start bowling at 2PM on that Sunday. Click here if you want to go bowling with us!

We had a great turnout for Roller skating with over 17 scouts attending this event! Our scouts learned that putting on something with wheels is not always easy to steer and stay up. Scouts worked on earning the roller skating belt loop and just having fun with their friends.

On January 1, 2015 two families and three Tiger Cub scouts met in Winston Salem to hike historic Bethabara. We hiked 2.3 miles of somewhat wet trails but learned about the first Moravian settlement in North Carolina. This location was settled before Old Salem it is a wonderful place to go learn about history. The scouts worked on the Hiking and Map and Compass belt loops.

Skiing Options

Every year the BSA offers Scouts on Skis days at Winterplace WV. This is offered council wide to all cub scout and boy scouts. Our family has participated in the past and it is a very nice ski slope. The dates for this year's opportunities are January 25, February 8, and March 1. These are all Sundays and the cost is $55 per person. Click here to get additional information if you are interested. Also, if you are interested please sign up on the sign up sheet so we can see who is interested and which time you want to go.

The second option is the Crabtree family is going to go to Sugar Mountain in Boone, NC for the weekend of January 23-25, 2015. We could setup a group skiing option on January 24 for a half-day of skiing from 12:30-4:30. The cost would be $42 for the scouts and $61 for the adults, that includes the rental and lift tickets, helmets would be extra. To get that price, we would need 15 people to sign up and pay in advance to ski. If you are interested please sign up here.

Pinewood Derby will happen in March,.As we get closer to the date, we will send out the rules about this event. Some people were asking if they can purchase kits. We will have them at the upcoming meetings and they are $4 per kit. Also, Lowe's Home Improvement offers Derby Days where they will show you tools you can use on the kits to help you. The scouts can get a patch for attending the training session: the dates offered are January 17, January 31, February 7, and February 21 from 11AM-1PM. At our leaders meeting we will discuss hosting a workshop day for people who need help cutting out their car.

Finally BSA (Boy Scouts of America) reevaluated the Cub Scout Program that we are currently using and have decided to change the program to be more in-line with the Boy Scout program. This program will go into effect on June 1, 2015. I have searched online for information on the new program and found a few files that you may be interested in reading. On the pack website under the documents section you will see the heading Cub Scout 2015 Program changes, here is link to that page on the website, this section is at the bottom of the page.

Yours in Scouting,
Lisa
