One week before Summer Break
This Tuesday is our last official meeting before summer break. Again, we might have new families looking to join, if you see new faces please welcome them. Thanks to the leaders for a wonderful year in cub scouting. Remember, we will have our End of the Year party on Saturday June 13, 2015 from 2-6 PM at Lake Michael in Mebane. Each family is asked to brings sides, desserts and drinks to share with all. Remember Lake Micheal allows fishing, has a few hiking trails and a play ground area. If you have not signed up please (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AptCbz03fqnnI4jATeGxsDRz4cyqFWVCVMmR2PqGeHk/edit?usp=sharing) do so by Tuesday so we can purchase the meat and buns needed. Also we will run the Rain Gutter Regatta at this event. If you still need a kit that will be available Tuesday night for $4. Each scout can only run one boat, but they do not have to participate. We have purchased a new course for this event. In the past, we have run this in actual rain gutters, but this year we purchased an inflatable gutter course from the scout store. Our thoughts are this would be easier to transport and store. We blew it up last night and put an older boat in the water, and realized the new course is wider which allows to boat to turn. With that being said, we may need adults on each side helping with the boats. For new parents the way this works is you build the boat with only the items in the kit, you are allowed to paint the boat, and trim just to 6 1/2 - 7'" long on the pontoons. The mast has to be 6 1/2 inches tall from deck, you can trim the sail, but you can't make it any bigger. For the race, each scout will face another scout twice, once in each lane to determine the winner of the heat, the scouts are given straws to blow their boats with, the straw cannot touch any part of the boat while racing. If you have any questions please let me know. We do not award certificates only trophies to the top 3 finishers. We will start the scouts racing in their dens and then move them forward as the competition goes along. We have a lot of things planned for this summer and we hope that the scouts will participate in many that we offer. Our summer newsletter will be out by next weekend and it will go into details of some of the special patches the scouts can earn over the summer if you attend the right events depending on the patch being sought. First of all Brandon Black is going to work on NOVA program for three Tuesdays this summer June 30, July 7 & July 14, if you are interested in your scout being a part of this special program please let Brandon know. Email drawgs@gmail.com (mailto:drawgs@gmail.com?subject=NOVA%20for%20Summer) Remember Twilight Camp this summer is June 15-19 at Cedarock Park each night from 6-9 pm. Cost has now gone up to $85 per scout. Should be tons of fun! Click here to sign up (http://bsaonsc.doubleknot.com/event/2015-alamance-twilight-camp/1731683) . Happy Memorial Day Weekend!
* Remember to take time to thank your service men and women and their families for all that they do for us.

Sorry for missing last week, but I took a weekend off to help with Relay for Life. Just a few weeks of the scouting school year left, then we will break for summer. Parents, anything that your scout has worked on this year needs to be turned into your leader by this Tuesday night (May 26). Leaders will record everything on Wednesday so we can place the order by Thursday. The new scouting program goes into affect on June 1st and we have to place the order to attain everything from the old program, before they switch their stock. Also, if during the year there are some awards or belt loops, pins or patches that you thought your scout should have gotten and did not, then email me so we can take care of that before June 1st. Reminder that many scouts worked on the Nova program last fall and only had one or two easy items remaining in order to earn their Nova patch. Parents need to get that done if they want their scout to earn the patch. All money for camp cards and all unsold camp cards are due this Tuesday May 26). All money for Webelos Camp and all Health Forms (parts A, B, & C) are due Tuesday for both adults and scouts. Remember part C has to be signed by the scouts doctor. New program starts June 1st. Boys should go ahead and get their handbook for next year. Books will be for sale at Twilight Camp only if you are registered to attend Twilight Camp. Tigers will meet this week at Cedarock Park from 7-8 pm for a fun night. Twilight camp is June 15-19 from 6-9 PM each night at Cedarock Park. The theme is "Cubs Take Flight". Cost is $55 if you pay before June 1, after that day cost goes to $85. Remember if you sign up as a staff member the cost is half price. For July, we will go to the Triangle Sportsplex for ice skating and for August we will do Putt-Putt. A lot of people were interested in a train ride and the Zoo Snooze, so we will look at working those into the schedule during the next cub scout year. Mom & Me
This weekend was great for the moms and scouts at Mom & Me. It was a little wet Friday evening, but Saturday was perfect. We had scouts that made crafts, fished, built airplanes, and did BB & archery. The ladies enjoyed time together and time with their scout. If you have any pictures, please share those on the Pack 65 Facebook page. We had 12 moms and 13 scouts participate this weekend at the biggest mom & me the council has ever hosted.
This Tuesday will be a parents/leaders meeting. We will be talking about the parent/leaders retreat, summer events, end of year party plans, rain gutter regatta, and pinewood derby wrap up. This weekend we have a couple of things going on. For the scouts who sold $750 can attend the fishing derby at Camp Woodfield with their families. Any Scout family is welcome to come out to the Wildlife Club (Hwy 87 South) from 8am-Noon with lunch provided for free. Then our troop is hosting a pancake supper at the Eli Whitney Community Center from 5-8pm cost is $7 for adults $4 for kids. Please come out and help send our scouts to summer camp. Twilight Camp is this summer June 15-19 at Cedarock Park from 6-9PM each night that week. Scouts have the opportunity to begin the brand new 2015 scouting program towards rank advancement. Scouts will get to shoot each night and do lots of fun things as the theme is "Flight". Travis Crabtree serves as the Program Director for this event click here to sign up for the early bird price (http://bsaonsc.doubleknot.com/event/2015-alamance-twilight-camp/1731683) of $55. Great Pinewood Derby!!
Wow what great event we had on Saturday. We had 24 scouts and 16 outlaw cars compete. Thanks to our Troop leaders who helped with track setup, inspections, and running the software! I think all the scouts enjoyed running their cars. Each scout ran their cars 6 times and the software took the average speed to determine the winners. Preston Murray took first place overall and Wyatt & Ryan Ehinger took second and third along with Adam Couturier taking fourth overall. These 4 scouts can represent Pack 65 at the District Pinewood Derby on May 9 at David Westcott Buick. For those scouts click here to sign up (http://bsaonsc.doubleknot.com/event/alamance-pinewood-derby/1679655) the deadline is May 1 to register for this event. For the Outlaw race, it was a sweep by the Murray family with Spencer Murray in first, Ellie Murray second and Laura Murray in third, way to go Murray family. We expect lessons next year! Click here to view pictures from this event! F (http://www.pack65nc.com/pinewood-derby.html) or many of our families we finished the Pinewood Derby and headed to Mebane for summer camp swim testing. We had 10 cub scouts show up to test and a few more siblings to take a dip in the indoor pool. This test is required for summer camps. While the scout does not have to be a swimmer, they do have to show their level of ability to a certified swim instructor. If your scout did not make it to the swim test, another is being offered May 17 at the Triangle Sportsplex in Hillsboroughclick here for details (http://www.bsaonsc.org/Documents/2015Precampswimcheck.pdf) . Otherwise when they arrive at camp they will have to take the test which will slow down their check in process dramatically. We are planning on hosting a parents/leader retreat this summer to plan for the upcoming years events. We really need more help with planning all of these events, recruitment, popcorn and also discussing the upcoming changes to the program. Please click which date works best for your schedule to attend. (https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LFBB3ZN) Remember this coming weekend is the Mom & Me event. If you signed up to attend this event, we want to know. We plan to purchase enough supplies for the scouts to have smores, so we need to know you are coming. Click here to let us know you are coming! (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1RoBqunlhzp9vG8VeZkynUimkYP9DoaZBNnQoRwpzpqI/edit?usp=sharing) This Tuesday we will have a pack meeting where scouts should be in their Class A uniform for this event. We will be handing out awards for items earned since Blue and Gold.

Shooting Sports Weekend at Camp Woodfield
Pack 65 enjoyed lots of fun this weekend at Camp Woodfield. The scouts were able to fish, shoot BB guns and archery. The parents enjoyed time together over the campfire and cooking, and all enjoyed the new cooking griddle station. Thanks to all the parents who chipped in and helped direct scouts. If you have any pictures from the event, either send them to me or post them on the Cub Scout Pack 65 facebook page. I am adding pictures to the pack website and will include them in the pack scrapbook. Click here to view pictures from this weekend (http://www.pack65nc.com/shooting-weekend-camp-woodfield.html)
 Pinewood Derby
This weekend is our Pinewood Derby event and I know our scouts are very excited. Remember the scouts who participated in the Scouting for Food program or when we did our food drive for SAFE may participate in our practice Friday night. We will setup at 6:30 with scouts to start practice at 7PM we should be finished at 8PM. The practice will allow those scouts to weigh their cars and run them down the track a couple of times. For all other scouts we plan to open the doors on Saturday at 9:30 for check-in. Our goal is to start racing by 10AM and hope to be finished by Noon. We do ask that somewhere on the car you have the scout's name listed. Upon arrival we will have the inspection station, which is where the scouts car will be fitted with a template and weighed. If they do not meet specs, the car can be taken to the pit area where minor repairs can be done before going through inspection again. Once a car passes inspection, it can no longer be handled by the scout or a guardian until racing. So make sure when you get to the inspection station that you are completely done with the car. We need every scout that plans to participate to sign up, so I can get certificates printed for each scout and patches ordered. Remember this is a long event, so we are asking each scout family to bring some drinks and snacks for the event! Cub Scout Week 4/4/2015

Meeting this Week ------------------------------------------------------------ I hope everyone has and will enjoy their Easter and your spring break! This Tuesday we will have our parents meeting from 6-6:45. We will cover meal planning for Camping at Woodfield, Pinewood Derby final plans andclick here for other topics (http://www.pack65nc.com/uploads/7/2/0/9/7209976/pack_agenda_april_2015.pdf) . Also on Tuesday, we will have our Pack meeting that will cover "Compassion". Scouts are asked to show up in Class A uniform, click here of uniform placement (http://) , awards will be given to scouts per den who are the most correctly dressed. Brandon still needs at least 3 parents to volunteer to help with the inspections. Please e-mail me ASAP if you can help. Our Pinewood Derby is looking promising but we still need more help. Our plan is to bring equipment to the April 14 meeting for scouts needing help cutting out their cars. Remember the only scouts that will be allowed to practice on April 24 are those who participated in the Scouting for Food program back in early February. We will only test cub scout Pinewood derby cars, no the outlaw cars will be allowed. All cars need to have a "name" on the car, this will help us keep up with the car on the day of the event. AWE will have a Spring clean-up on April 11 and have invited the scouts to help, bring rakes, gloves and be prepared to work the morning hours. BEJ will host building a butterfly garden on May 16 at 9AM. Both of these are great service projects. We just got the patches for participating in the Adopt a School program. We are the only pack in the USA to adopt two schools! WAY TO GO PACK 65!
