8/15/2015 Week in Scouting

8/21/2015

Wow, can you believe it just one more week till most of our scouts start back at school. I really hope that all of you have enjoyed your summer. I know I have taken the last two weeks to spend time with the boys and enjoy one last trip to the beach and get ready for school. With one week left this week, we have a busy week. We need parents to help us get the word out about scouting. We have made arrangements with both AWE and BEJ to allow us to have a table with information about the scouting program. Please take time to sign up for a 30 minute window at the school that your scout attends, if we can have parents in Class B and if the scout could be in Class A, that would be great. We would like to have any of our home school scouts join us at either location. Both schools are hosting open houses from August 20, 2015 from 4-6 pm. Any scout who helps with Open House and/or recruitment night can earn a rocket. All new scouts that join this year will get a rocket on October 10 at 3 PM at the Alamance Battleground to launch. The pack is purchasing rockets for scouts that help with recruitment.

Last year the pack made a commitment with Adopt-a-School program through BSA at both AWE & BEJ, which means we have to perform 4 service projects during the scouting year. We have made arrangements at both schools for Saturday August 22, 2015 from 9-11 AM to perform a school clean up. At AWE, we will be trimming bushes and weeding areas around the school along with a trash and limb pickup. At BEJ, we will perform a trash cleanup of the grounds. This is very important for the scouts to understand that a big part of the program is giving back to the community.

Also on Saturday August 22 at 2 PM, we will have our hike for August at Occonneechee Park in Hillsborough. We will meet the naturalist, who will lead the pack in a hike and we will learn about the very unique geology and other rocks in the park that have helped with our US space program and the construction of many of the buildings on the Duke University Campus.

We would still like to encourage any parent to sign up for BALOO training. We are required to have at least 2 members of the pack trained for any camping trips. The pack has agreed to pay for any parent that takes the class. You will need to sign up and pay and the pack will roll the money into scout bucks once completing the course. This is a great course for any parent still new to camping. Click here to sign up! (http://bsaonsc.doubleknot.com/event/baloo/1768047)

8/8/2015 Week in Scouting

8/21/2015

Putt-Putt was tons of fun this week. We had 11 scouts that were in attendance, plus one family that visited and we hope will join at the first of September. Putt-Putt staff was great and the scouts and families played putt-putt, the video games and we all enjoyed pizza and had fun catching up.

We had at least 4 families attend the Burlington Royals game on Saturday evening. They camped out and had a great night!

We have confirmed open house tables at both AWE & BEJ on August 20 from 4-6pm. We are asking each family to help staff the table for about 30 minutes. Please signup for a shift and help educate other interested families on our scouting program.

We have also arranged our first Adopt a School Community Service event. Both BEJ & AWE will have a school yard clean up on August 22 from 9-11 AM.
After the school clean up, we will have a hike at Occonneechee State Park at 2 PM.

This year we will have new rules in place to help our leaders and also to respect the church space. The rules will be included in our new handbook. Each family will be given the first night to review and sign the handbook. I thought I would go ahead and highlight the den rules so they do not take families by surprise.
 Den Rules
 1. Always be on time.
2. Always wear your uniform with pride.
3. Always behave and follow instructions.
4. Always follow Akela.
5. Always DO YOUR BEST.

Discipline at den meetings will be at the discretion of the den leader in accordance with the following guidelines:
 1. Failure to obey a rule will result in a warning, followed by time out or removal from an activity. In cases of harmful or repetitive misbehavior, parents may be called to pick up the Scout.
 2. At the Den Leader's discretion, parents may be required to attend den functions with their Scout.
3. Den Leaders have the right to exclude a Scout from their Den for reasons of conduct. The situation will be reviewed by the Pack Committee and, in extreme cases, and after consultation with the Council, a boy may be dismissed from the Pack for misconduct.
4. Den meetings are for Scouts, their parent, and leaders. Other arrangements should be made for siblings during this time. It is the duty of any uniformed adult leader of Cub Scout Pack 65 to assist in maintaining order with the Cub Scouts during any Pack function. Parents are responsible for the conduct of their non-scout children during Pack activities. Parents may be asked to remove disruptive children from these meetings and events. We recognize that as a participant, we, through our actions, represent Pack 65, the Alamance District, the Old North State Council, and the Boy Scouts of America. We will uphold these standards of expected conduct with a smile.
 Yours in Scouting, Lisa

8/1/2015 Week in Scouting

This Week events!
This week we have Putt-Putt on Tuesday starting at 6PM, you are still welcome to join us, the cost is $9 per person which includes 1 round of putt, 20 tokens, 2 slices of pizza and drink.
On Saturday night is the Scouts with Burlington Royals night. The price is $10 per person, which includes game ticket, dinner, light breakfast, and camping for the night. This is a special night for the scouts and you can call (336) 222-0223 for tickets. Mike Solomon will be attending this event, there are no assigned seats for this event. The scouts are allowed to do a parade lap before the game and they prefer the scouts to be in Class A for the lap but after that they can be in Class B.
We have secured BEJ for Open House August 20 from 4-6PM and we are hoping to also have AWE for the same date and time. Our goal for this event is to provide information to any parents that are interested in Scouting. We ask if you have a child at either school that you help staff a table. If we can get each family to help, then you should only need to take 30 minute shifts. Also, we would like to invite our home school families to help.  Right now we are just planning on recruiting at those two schools, but if anyone has ideas for other schools and the home school program, please share that with me this week. I have to tell our plans this week at the recruitment meeting at Blessed Sacrament Church.

Each year we host an Ice Cream Social/Popcorn kickoff, this year's event will be September 22 at the Eli Whitney Community Building. The ice cream social is a time to welcome new families into the pack and help answer questions. The Popcorn Kickoff is to announce goals for this year and explain how the details for this year's upcoming popcorn season. We ask that each family bring ice cream, drinks, and toppings. I have created asignup sheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1D6j1AwLZue01KPVCTJ9Kc1lDU0lxpIfyuwCvohlJ0cc/edit?usp=sharing) if you want to go ahead and get signed up.
