Cub Scouts in Action!
Last Sunday we had a few scouts show up at AWE to help pick up trash. They collected several bags of trash! Thanks for all your hard work! Yesterday we had 7 scouts show up for a great Hike next to the Eno River. We did a 1.2 mile loop on the Cole Mill trail that kept us close to the river. We got to see turtles sunning in the river on a log as we walked! Great day to be outside! Also yesterday, the Old North State Council hosted Women in Scouting Alliance. Saturday was just the start of what they hope will be a great addition to the overall scouting program. They are still working to develop what will be the goal of this group, but they need help in several committees from fundraising to marketing the scouting program, if you are interested in helping serve, let me know and I will pass your name along. Families are starting to sign up for camping on April 17-19. We hope we will have many families join us. This should be a nice relaxed weekend. The scouts will shoot either BB or archery in the morning hours for 1 hour and 45 minutes. The they will do the opposite in the afternoon for the same length of time. In the down time, they are welcome to fish or explore Camp Woodfield. If you have not camped with us then there are a couple of forms that you need to fill out before you can camp. Remember the deadline to sign up ( for this event is March 31, 2015. Also remember the council is offering BALOO training which is basically an introduction to camping. It is a great class for anyone new to camping. I know we already have 3 parents signed up to take the BALOO class. We would like to have more if any are interested! Here is where you sign up for the class
Lastly, each summer our Bears and Webelos I can attend Webelos camp for a week at Camp Woodfield. To attend this event they have to take a swim test before attending to determine how well they can swim. We generally host our own swim test with Troop 65 at a local gym's pool. The pack use to have one person certified to run the test and the troop had one, the pack no longer has anyone in this role. If you are willing to take the training here is the information on it. 2015 Swim and Water Rescue Class 3/28/2015 8:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. Last Day to Register is 3/20/2015 11:30 P.M. Contact colin.lemon@scouting.org (mailto:colin.lemon@scouting.org) if you have questions. Cost is $16.00 Learn how to safely conduct unit level swimming activities and administer swim checks for your unit. All packs, troops, & crews are encouraged to have at least one unit leader trained in Swimming and Water Rescue. Held at Elon University pool Lunch provided - deli sandwich, chips, and drink. Successful completion of this course qualifies leaders to administer swim checks for their own unit or other units. This does not satisfy qualifications as a swimming merit badge counselor. Prerequisites: • Participants must be at least 16 years old by March 27 • Complete the swimmer test • Recover a weight from the bottom of the pool • Submit a current medical form with parts A and B completed (bring this with you to the training) The new BSA Medical Form can be found here: http://www.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-001_AB.pdf Materials to bring: • Swim suit(s) and towels • Aquatics Supervision Manual • Change of dry clothes • Day pack to keep your belongings in (we will not have access to lockers during the training session) The Aquatics Supervision Manual (Item 34346) may be purchased from the Old North State Scout Shop or from the National Supply Division at www.scoutstuff.org (http://www.scoutstuff.org/) . The manual costs approximately $29.99 Please note that this course is also offered each week of summer camp at Cherokee. Registration for the course at summer camp may be done on check-in day. Old North State Council Aquatic Chair: Randy Mintz For more information, please call the Council office or send questions and comments to rmintz@greensboroday.org (mailto:rmintz@greensboroday.org) . To register online, click below on "register" Click here to print a registration form to mail to the Council Office... (http://www.bsaonsc.org/documents/2015swimwaterrescue.pdf) We also must participate in the Camp Woodfield Beaver Day to achieve the honor pack award during Webelos Camp. This is a dedicated workday to prepare Camp Woodfield for thousands of scouts, parents and staff across the summer. We need a team of parents and scouts (more hands makes for easy lifting) willing to go on Saturday May 30th to work on projects. Please let Travis now as soon as possible. Lunch will be provided to workers in attendance, but they need a headcount in advance. Yours in scouting, Lisa
